Install VLC Player in Ubuntu 9.10 / 10.04 with out internet connection (Offline)

VLC offline installer will allow you to install VLC player with out internet connection (offline). Download the package from here http://rapidshare.com/files/305466861/VLC_Offline_Installer_ubuntu_9.10.tar.gz and save it in the desktop or home folder. Right click on the downloaded package and select extract here. Now you can see new folder. In the extracted folder double click on the install.sh file. This will bring up new window in which select run in terminal option. Now you are done. You can find the installed VLC player under Applications --> Sound & Video --> VLC.

This must be one of the most wanted package any body like to install after installing fresh Ubuntu. Gyachi is yahoo messenger for linux which has many features like file transfer, photo transfer, mail notification, voice chat, web cam support...etc., Though many internet messangers like pidgin and Empathy provides some of this features none can match up Gyachi. Originally developed by Erica Andrews as Gyach Enhanced and discontinued due to his personal commitment. Presently due to some of the enthusiastic open source supporters this project is reborn as Gyachi (Gyach Improved). This is feature rich yahoo messenger under Linux. There is a dedicated PPA for this package. Installing Gyachi also easy under Ubuntu 9.10.

Go to System --> Administration --> Software Sources. In the new window Select third party software and click on Add tab. This will bring up small window in which type ppa:loell/ppa. Closing software sources window will ask you to reload. Once reloaded open synoptic package manager (System --> Administration --> Synoptic Package Manager) and search for a package gyachi --> Right click --> mark for installation then apply or else you can simply type sudo apt-get install gyachi in the terminal (Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal). Thats it. Now you can find Gyachi under Application --> Internet --> Gyachi

This is the easiest way one can download videos from YouTube.com. No software is required to do this.

1. Watch your favorite video on firefox till end.

2. Minimize the firefox window (Do not close it).

3. Go to /tmp folder (File System --->> tmp).

4. You can see a file name starting with Flash...

5. Copy this file and paste it in your favorite location.

Ideally it should work for all video websites. But i have not tried.

Disable Update Manager Popup Window

One of the change in the Ubuntu 9.04 is update manager. It pop's up every time if updates are available. Though it is good, some time it is annoying when you do some important work. This update manager pop up window can be disabled easily. Type sudo gconf-editor in the terminal and hit enter. In the new window navigate to apps --->> update-notifier. Now on the right hand side disable the auto_launch option by clicking on the tick mark. Remember that it will only disable pop up window not the update manager so if you want to update your system then go to System --->> Administration --->> update Manager and install updates.

Boot Multiple Distro from USB / Flash drive / Pendrive

As we all know best way to test new Linux distro is to boot from Live CD. But now a days new distros are coming out on the daily basis. So why you waste CD's? Better you can boot live distro from USB and it will be more fun if you have a multiple flavor of live distros in a USB. So in this post i will explain easiest way to create bootable USB with multiple Live distros, Troubleshooting and adding new distro which are not supported by the multicd.sh. By following this method i could boot 21 distros / Utilities from my Pendrive with lot of space to store data :-))

NOTE:: All the methods worked well for me but i can not give guaranty for anyone.

Creating and installing Multiple Distros in to USB / Pendrive

This involves two parts:-

1. Creating Multiple Live distro --->> Using Multicd.sh
2. Installing Multiple Live distro in to a USB / Pendrive --->> Using Unetbootin

Part I
For the first part you can follow up this post. At the end of it you will get multicd.iso file with your favorite distros.

Note:: If you write this multicd.iso in to a CD / DVD as an image file then you can directly boot from CD / DVD with multiple distros.

Part II
This part is quite simple and strait forward. If you do not know what is Unetbootin then click here to find. Download the window version of Unetbootin from same link as it is better supported. Remember that installation is not required for the windows version. I have not tested the Linux version but i think it should work.

Once the multicd.iso file is been created, reboot and login to windows. Insert Pendrive and wait for some time for windows to recognize it. Go to my computer to see the name of USB / Pendrive. In my case it is F:\. Now double click on the Unetbootin.exe file which you have downloaded from the above site. Unetbootin has three options Distribution, Disk Image and Custom. Click on the Disk Image option and navigate to the multicd.iso file which you have already created. Make sure that Type is set as USB Drive and Drive as recognized by windows. In my case it is F:\. Once again check everything and give OK. Unetbootin will take some time to install multicd.iso depending up on the size. After successful installation Unetbootin will ask you to reboot and go ahead. Now you have successfully installed multiple distro in USB and all set to access your favorite distro.

Upon reboot set your BIOS boot preference to USB. If you do not know how to set BIOS option then check this link to learn more. Once you set your BIOS option, system will boot from USB and you can see the list of distros you have already compiled using multicd.sh. Choose your favorite one to login. Remember that it is not a persistence installation so when ever you shutdown or reboot all data will be lost.

Problem and Troubleshooting

It is well and good if you can boot all the distros successfully. Trouble shooting is as easy as installing those distros. In some cases it may happen that you can see the list of distros after boot up from USB / Pendrive but may not be able to log in to distro. Note down which are the distros creating problem. For example Linuxmint and Knoppix are not booting. Login to Ubuntu and insert your pendrive / USB. Open pendrive and go to boot/isolinux and double click on isolinux.cfg (this is the file created by multicd.sh). Once you click on isolinux.cfg a new small window will prompt you with four options and click on Display. Now new text file will open with content like this (only entries for linuxmint and knoppix are given bellow). Note down the path for both kernel and append.

Now go to root folder (just open Pendrive), search for isolinux.cfg file (this is the file created by Unetbootin) and open it in the same fashion. Now find the entry of kernel and append for Linux mint and Knoppix. Ideally both the isolinux.cfg file entries should be same. If not then copy entry of linuxmint and knoppix from /boot/isolinux.cfg to /isolinux.cfg. Thats it. Boot from USB to login.

Adding distro which are not supported by the multicd.sh

In case if you want to add more distros which are not supported by the multicd.sh then follow up this method. When you download any distro it will be in iso format. Rightclick on it and select Extract here. Once extracted you can see the files and folders inside. Just copy and all and paste in to USB / Pendrive as it is (i mean do not change the directory structure). Note that some of the files and folders are not required like [BOOT] and isolinux (folder). Now search for the isolinux.cfg in the extracted folder and open it. Look at the entry for menu label, kernel and append. Copy those lines and paste in to /isolinux.cfg in the Pendrive. Save it and boot from USB. Now you can see those menu label entry in the boot up screen. Select the entry to go ahead.

Note:: Some of the distros use same directory structure with same name. In that case you can not install both. For example Linux mint and Ubuntu so choose your best distro.

Hide drive / partitions from Desktop - Ubuntu 9.04

When ever you mount drives / partitions, drive icons will appear in the desktop. If these icons annoying you then simply remove it by using following method. Open Terminal (Applications -->> Accessories -->> Terminal), type sudo gconf-editor and hit enter. This will bring up new window (see screen shot).

In the configuration editor window navigate to apps -->> nautilus -->> desktop. Now you can see volume_visible is enabled on the right side of the window. Disable it by clicking on the tick mark. Thats it.

Mount drives / partitions always (permanently) in Ubuntu 9.04

For some reason Ubuntu does not mount drives automatically. i.e other than home folder remaining drives / partitions has to be mounted to view content inside. Though it can be mounted each time when you click on the drives / partitions, it will create problem setting wallpaper from other drives / partitions and songs can not be played directly from albums in Rhythmbox just after boot up. There is an excellent tool to overcome this problem. Open Synoptic Package Manager (System -->> Administration -- >> synoptic Package Manager) search for package "pysdm" and install it (Mark for installation -->> Apply). Once the pysdm package is installed you can open it from System -->> Administration -->> Storage Device Manager. Here is the screen shot...

On the left side of Storage Device Manager you can see sda, sda1,...etc. While clicking on each drive, a new small window will pop up and ask you to enable drive. Just give ok. Do this for all drive. Thats it. Now onwards your drives / partitions will be automatically mounted while booting up on every time.

Note:: By the time you complete this step you could see all your drive / partition icons in your desktop. If you do not want these drive / partition icons to be visible in the desktop then follow this method.

How to edit / manipulate a .deb file of a compiled application

First of all, as I mentioned in the title, this post is about how to create or manipulate deb files of an already compiled application. In this topic I’m not going to explain you how to create a deb starting from source code :)

I’ll try to give you every possible indication in this article, if you miss some information but find the article interesting, please comment and ask me how to make things I failed to explain.

Not going to tell you what a .deb file is and what it is for, but you should really know that a deb is just a common archive in an .ar format, camouflaged with another name. So, right clicking on the deb file and choosing to open it with a common compressed files manager (such as file roller in gnome and OpenGEU) will work and show you the contents of the file. Now, you can modify an already existent deb file or create one from scratch. Should you prefer the second option, don’t be scared, it really is a simple task.

A deb file contains two main files, so, to manipulate an existing deb, open it with an archive manager and extract those files wherever you wish. The files we are talking about are:

* control.tar.gz
* data.tar.gz

Now, create a new dir with the name of the applications you’re creating (in reality, the name of this dir means nothing but you may still want the name to have a meaning, just for your convenience..), then, inside of this dir, create a subdir called debian. Now, enter the debian dir and create another sub-dir called DEBIAN. All of this work is case sensitive so use the right letters. The dir structure at this point should look like this:

application_name –> debian –> DEBIAN

Very well now, you can open the file called control.tar.gz

Inside of this file you’ll find some other files, just extract them into the DEBIAN dir as they are. Now open the file called data.tar.gz and extract its contents into the debian dir as they are, with any contained folder and subfolder: in other words, leave the directory structure of the compressed archive unaltered.

Perfect, not we have just recreated the directory structure of the original deb file. Enter the DEBIAN dir, you’ll find there a file called “control” (without quotes, never consider quotes from now on in the article please).

control

This is the main “brain” of a debian file: it contains all of the informations reguarding this package, without this file the entire creation of a deb package has no meaning at all. A control file looks like this (quoting the contents of the opengeu-artwork-usplash’s control file as an example):

The startup screen shown on OpenGEU boot, by default it is the Sunshine version, you can later change it to the Moonlight edition too using usplash-switcher.

Let’s analyze the important parts this file together:

* Package: you have to put here the name of the package, never use spaces, never use a version number. It is case sensitive, be warned!
* Version: of course, the version number / code. It can also be, for example, opengeu-3.0.2 or any other weird code, as long as the last part is a number. Always remember that chaning the version to a higher number triggers the system to consider that new file as an update of course!
* Priority: optional, high, low, only system or security updated should have something like high in the priority.
* Architecture: i386, amd64, all, you should specify here what platform this package is compiled for. If it is only an artowork or a metapackage, you can put all in the Architecture field.
* Depends: a list of all the packages this package depends on. A metapackage, for example, can include almost nothing but depend on a lot of other packages so that installing this metapackage automatically installs a lot of other packages! That’s what happens with opengeu-desktop for example!
* Conflicts: if you know that your package can’t work if another package is installed, well, you should then list that package here.
* Replaces: Here you specify that this file replaces another package, maybe an old one. Useful if you change the name of the package into something else and whant the new package to be installed INSTEAD of the package to be replaced.
* Description: put only a very short description in the first line, then enter a longer description on the second line, like it is shown in the example above.

Well, and that’s almost eveything about the control file. But this is not the only file you can find in the DEBIAN dir. For example, you could find also a prerm or postinst file, or you could find both of them: they are scripts.

postinst

This script will execute any action contained in it right after the installation of the package. Here’s an example, the contents of the postinst file contained in the opengeu-artwork-usplash package:

So, right after the installation o the package, those commands are executed, very simply!

prerm

This script instead is executed right before the package is removed! Here are teh contents of the prerm file contained in the opengeu-artwork-usplash package:

If you are creating a new deb file from scratch, remember to right click on those files, move the permission tag and make them executable, or they won’t work.

Keeping the folders clean

Every time you create or modify a new text / script file, some temporary files are created and we don’t want them to go into the deb. So enable your file browser to see hidden files and remove the temporary files before compiling the deb!

Data

Every file that has to be installed into the system goes into the debian folder. Let’s say that this is like the heart of our deb package. Consider this folder as the “/” mount point of your system, the main system folder or whatever you call it. Basically, you have to recreate into the debian folder the structure of the folders and files you wish to be installed into the system. So, let’s say that our package has to install the usplash-theme-opengeu-moonlight.so file into the /usr/lib/usplash/ folder, then, you’ll have to create or edit the files and folders status to look like this:

package-name/debian/usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-opengeu-moonlight.so

Installing the deb file will cause the usplash-theme-opengeu-moonlight.sot o be copied in the right place :)

You can of course add multiple files into the same package with multiple folder structures but remember that if you create a package containing the same files as another already installed package, and if this new package is not an upgrade to the other one, the installation will fail. apt-get will give you an error saying that the file is already contained in another package and therefore it cannot be overwritten.

Creating the real package

Now that we created the contents and the controls of the package, let’s build it so that a deb file is created for us automatically. Move yourself in the main folder of the application, in our example, it should be the “package-name” folder. Open a terminal here and run:

sudo dpkg-deb -build debian

You’ll be asked to install some extra packages the first time you use this command, just do it and then run the command again. A debian.deb file will be created in the dir you are in, just rename it to mirror your tastes, I suggest you to try and name it with the same name you mentioned in the control file, followed by the file version, for example: opengeu-artwork-usplash-3.0.deb and remember never to use spaces!

Conclusions

The file is now ready to be installed. In this way and knowing the files structure you can create any new deb from scratch or edit an existent one, no difference. Just use any control file as a template. Remember to keep your folder structure clean and that it is case sensitive and you’ll soon create nice deb packages :-)

Reliance Net Connect on UBUNTU / KUBUNTU 9.04 by using ZTE MG880 Modem (With out wvdial)

If you google around for configuring your reliance USB modem on ubuntu / kubuntu 9.04 then almost all links will lead to wvdial configuration. But there is also another way of doing it with out touching wvdial is by using pppconfig. This post is not restricted to ZTE MG880 Modem. To avoid confusion and errors please copy and paste commands. Here we go...

Note:: 1. Screen shot have been taken from Kubuntu but procedure is same for Ubuntu too.

1. Firstly we will have to find out modem vendor id and product id. Use the following command to find it.

sudo lsusb -v

You can see the output like this...

In the menu.lst file add the following lines at the end of kernal line (Not in the next line)

5. Close all terminal. Open new terminal and type

sudo pppconfig

in the new (below) window select Create and give ok...

Type provider name (say reliance) and give ok

Select Dynamic and give ok

Select PAP and give ok

Enter your Reliance Number and give ok

Password is same as your Reliance Number, enter it and give ok

Do not change Modem Speed

Select Tone and give ok

Enter #777 and give ok

Enter yes

Select Manual and give ok

Give your modem port. In my (most of the) case it is /dev/ttyUSB0

Now all set. Ensure Everything is fine. Select Finished then ok

Finally in the last wind select Quit and give ok

Now you have configured your modem successfully and all set to connect.

6. To establish internet connection type the following command in terminal...

sudo pon reliance

7. Ensuring connection is established use this command...

ifconfig

Now you should see entry like this...

Delete unnecessary files and free disk space

BleachBit is a disk space cleaner for linux (same like Ccleaner for windows). BleachBit deletes unnecessary files to free valuable disk space, maintain privacy and remove junk. It removes caches, temporary files, cookies and broken shortcuts. For ubuntu 9.04 it is directly available from synoptic Package Manager. For other version of ubuntu you can download BleachBit from here. Installing BleachBit is simple. Open Synoptic Package Manager (System--> Administration-->> Synoptic Packate Manager). Search for package bleachbit -->> right click and select mark for installation. Once marked select apply for installation. After installation BleachBit can be find under Application -->> System Tools.

Create Multi Live Linux Distro in single CD/DVD

After googling around for few days i found this useful script from www.multicd.tuxfamily.org. Multicd.sh is a shell script written by maybeway36 which enables two or more Live Linux distros / utilities to be able to boot from single CD/DVD. It is really very simple to create multi Live Linux distro in a single disc. Create a folder in your home folder (Places--> Home folder) and name it as multicd. Put all the live Linux iso images along with multicd.sh script inside multicd folder. Close the window. Open terminal (Application -->> Accessories -->> Terminal)
and give the following commands

cd multicd
chmod +x multicd*.sh
sudo ./multicd*.sh

Above commands will execute multicd.sh. While executing, this script will download few packages from Internet and make a new iso image called multicd.iso for you inside multicd folder. Check the size of multicd.iso image file. If it exceeds more than 700 mb then you must insert DVD to write it. Choose burn image option from your favorite image burning software to write multicd.iso file. Upon reboot, with the CD/DVD present inside CD/DVD drive, new GRUB will display list of live distros available in the disc. Choose your favorite one to login...

Note: When you download any Linux iso image from internet it will look like this "ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386" but this has to be renamed as ubuntu.iso (inside multicd folder). Presently this script supports 20 live distros. List of Live Linux distros supported in this script are given below (and the names accepted by this script are on the right side of each distro).

Linux Mint → linuxmint.iso (cannot be on the same DVD as Ubuntu)

Drag panel - Ubuntu 9.04

Just installed Ubuntu 9.04 in my friend's laptop. He is not comfortable with the top panel and wanted it to be bottom along with other panel. Normally it can be done by dragging with your right mouse button clicked or right click -->> select an option move. But this same trick wont work in Ubuntu 9.04. Instead you must press Alt and drag the panel. Found this short cut today :-)

Install KTorrent in Ubuntu 9.04 with out internet connection

KTorrent is said to be one of the best Bittorrent client for kde environment. But this can also be installed in Ubuntu 9.04 too with out internet connection. It has many features same like uTorrent (which is one of the powerful windows based bittorrent clint). Expect for the start up time my choice for best bittorrent clint is KTorrent. KTorrent offline insataller9.04 is created with the help of aptoncd. This will allow user to install KTorrent in Ubuntu 9.04 with out internet connection. Install Multimedia Codec in Ubuntu 9.04 with out internet (offline)

This post will be useful for those do not have internet connection. These methods are only restricted to ubuntu 9.04. For ubuntu 8.10 go here.

Installing ubuntu restricted extras by following methods will enable multimedia codec, java run time, flash, unrar, commanly used M$ fonts and libdvdcss (required to play encrepted DVDs). If Ubuntu is brand new to you then use method one.

Method I

Download ubuntu-restricted-extras-31 for ubuntu 9.04 from here http://rapidshare.com/files/229539080/ubuntu_restricted_extras_31.deb It is basically debian package (like .exe file in windows). Once downloaded double click on it this will ask you to give password to proceed further. So give your password and relax for few second. Thats it. Now onwards you should be able to play your favourite movies and audio songs.

Method II

Download Ubuntu restricted extras offline installer 9.04 from here http://rapidshare.com/files/226569752/Ubuntu_Restricted__Extras_9.04_Offline_Installer.tar.gz. Once downloaded extract the package (right click --> extract here). In the new folder double click on install.sh file. Now new (small)window will appear in which you have to select run in terminal tab. Note that this package will not install Microsoft fonts automatically. To install Microsoft fonts copy fonts folder from ubuntu restricted extras offline installer 9.04 and paste in Home folder (places --> Home folder) and rename it as .fonts ( yes it is "dot fonts"). Thats it...

Download, Install & Read ebooks directly from the Internet by using gutenbrowser

The Gutenberg project releases books in a standard text format. Volunteers convert a subset of the text to HTML and PDFs and to a few other less ubiquitous formats besides. Other support sites such as manybooks.net give you even more choice of formats including compressed formats for palmtops, iPod and Java-based telephones. These sites are mostly free with the option to make a small donation.

The Gutenberg project has delivered to the world the base material for serious and progressive Edutainment. Started back in 1971 by Michael S. Hart, the project has blossomed with numerous affiliated projects. The project’s great success is measurable with a body of around 100,000 available texts—and rising.
To download and install those books open synoptic package manager and search for the package gutenbrowser right click on it and select mark for installation. This will sellect required dependency package for the browser. After selecting package apply for installation. once package is been installed open up terminal type gutenbrowser and hit enter. Now you will see the gutenbrowser in the new window.

To download the book lisk go to library and select gutenberg. This will download list of all available books. Once the list is downloaded you can search books by either title or author name using search option. Now you can download your selected books by double clicking on the it. Downloading may take few second to few minutes depending on ebook size. If you want to read the downloaded books go to library and select lacal. This will show list of all downloaded eboobks from the internet. select your desired book and enjoy reading :-)

Uninstall Ubuntu (safest and easiest way)

Though uninstalling ubuntu is unimaginable for me, i did it for my friend due to space crunch in his laptop. So following guide should be useful for those installed ubuntu (any linux) and windows OS and planning to uninstall ubuntu, make windows bootable and merge ubuntu partion. There are so many methods you can follow. But following steps are simplest and easiest way to do that.

To do the above you should have ubuntu 8.10 live C.D and Super Gurub Disk. Super Grub Disk can be downloaded from here in various format. I have downloaded iso format which is of 5mb. Once downloaded the latest version of iso format, write it on the blank C.D as an image file.

Put your Super Grub Disk in your C.D drive and restart your computer/laptop. You must see the the following page during startup if not then change your boot order to C.D drive in Bios setup.

from the above screen screen select Super Grub Disk. Next screen should appear like this.

There are various options on the above screen. which are listed below with bit explanation. Out of all option select Super Grub Disk (with help).

Super Grub Disk (WITH HELP) :-)))
You can choose Super Grub Disk with the classical (normal) help.

Super Grub Disk (NO HELP) :-|
You can choose SGD not to display any help. For those who know what they are doing and in a hurry. For advanced users.

GRUB => MBR & !LINUX! (1) AUTO ;-)
This is the indicated option for newbies. The wink.
It tries to find the first stage1 file, installs GRUB into the MBR,
tries to find menu.lst and boots its.

GRUB => MBR & !LINUX! (>=2) MANUAL |8-)
Same thing as above, but if you have more than one Linux now you can choose which stage1 to install and which menu.lst to boot.

!WIN! :(((
So sad... this option boots windows.

WIN => MBR & !WIN! :(((((((((((((((((((((
This is even more sad... this option adds a syslinux bootloader that
chainloads the first active partition which usually contains Windows.

EASY LIVE SWAP
This option switches the hard disk boot priority around in the BIOS using (map) commands, but the changes are not persistent.

Once you selected the option hit enter. Following screen will appear in which choose your language (English).

Next few pages after language selection will be introduction and help. so go through help page carefully and hit enter to move to next page.
In the last screen you will find four option to choose these are
GNU/Linux
Windows
Boot & Tools
Advanced

Choose Windows if you want to restore or boot your windows OS from here onwards. Select advanced option on the next screen which will leads to a menu where you can
restore Window's NTLDR bootloader's IPL to MBR (equivalent to FIXMBR),
boot Windows by its boot sector (bypassing the MBR),
boot Windows on a non-first hard disk,
set the boot flag on a Windows partition,
and re-install Windows NTLDR's IPL to a boot sector (equivalent to FIXBOOT).

Thats it now onwards your system will log into windows only.
Next step is to uninstall ubuntu for which you require ubuntu live cd. Put it in your drive and restart. Select Try Ubuntu option. Once Ubuntu is loaded go to system --> Administration --> and select Partition editor. Look for your Ubuntu swap partition in the list—it will probably be identified as linux-swap. Right-click it and then select Swapoff from the menu that appears. Select the main Ubuntu partition (it will be identified as ext3 in the list), right-click and select Delete. Repeat with the linux-swap partition. Note that the two partitions might be in an extended partition. You may need to select this too and then select Delete. Right-click the NTFS (Windows) partition and select Resize/Move. Then, in the dialog that appears, click and drag the right-edge of the graphical representation of the partition until it fills the disk. Click the Resize/Move button. Then click the Apply button in the main Gparted window. Note that if you see an error during NTFS resizing, it’s likely you didn’t shutdown Windows properly the last time you used it. Reboot into Windows and run a chkdsk. Then repeat this step. Note that repartitioning will take few to more hours.

Monitor your internet speed (using Netspeed)

One can monitor internet speed in ubuntu. Just search for a package called netspeed in the synoptic packet manager. Once marked it, apply for installation. It hardly takes few seconds to download and install. Now right click Panel (next to volume control) --> Add to panel --> type netspeed in the search column --> Now select Network Monitor (netspeed) and Add to the panel. Now onwards it should show your internet speed on your panel. By using netspeed either you can monitor total speed or in coming/out going separately just by right clicking the applet --> preferences and enable /disabling the required options.

Synchornize your system time with ubuntu server

Access Yhoo and other email accounts through Yahoo Zimbra in Ubuntu / Linux

All my efforts to access my yahoo (and gmail) accounts in all major mail client like Evolution and Thunderbird failed until i came across little known mail client stuff called zimbra. It is based on Mozilla Prism technology and said to be a next generation mail client. I have Installed it in my laptop recently. I found it much faster, and lighter than Evolution. It also comes with all other stuffs like calender and others which major mail client has to offer.

Important point is, you need not have to worry about incoming / outgoing server (particullarly for yahoo), port number and bhla bhla things... simply login by giving your username and password thats it...

Enable More Compiz (3D) Effects... (Ubuntu 8.10)

I am always crazy about Compiz effects and enabled it by installing compiz-setting-manager from

Systems ---> Administration ---> Synoptic Packet Manager

After enabled all effects from Compiz setting manager which i found under System ---> Preferences ---> compiz setting manager, i could get only few effects like Desktop cube, fire on desktop, water effects, minimize effects and few more... after googling around quite some time on Internet i found out solution to enable more eye candy effects. you can also enable these effects by installing simple-ccsm from synoptic or simply typing command in the terminal.

sudo apt-get install simple-ccsm

(Terminal can be found under Application ---> Accessories). After installation you can find Simple-ccsm under

System ---> Preferences (as a Simple Compizconfig Setting Manager)

click on it and enable your preferred effects...

Download and update - faster

Every now and again the Ubuntu update servers become a little congested, particularly when there’s a new release of Ubuntu. If you find this happening, switch to an alternative server, preferably located near where your computer is located. there are many servers around the
world, all mirroring the same repositories.

View all of a digital photo’s technical information

Most pictures taken by digital cameras are saved in EXIF JPEG format. This means that they record technical details about the shot along with the actual image data. The information includes the exposure time, the aperture used, whether the flash was active, and so on. In Ubuntu you can view this information by right-clicking any image, clicking Properties, and then looking at the Image tab. To view even more information, double-click the image so it opens in Eye of GNOME (the default Ubuntu image viewer) and then click File → Properties. Then click the Metadata tab and click the Details fold-down. Remember that even dialog boxes within Ubuntu can be enlarged by clicking and dragging the corners—this can really help view all the available information. To view the information at the command-line, use Synaptic to installthe exif package. Then, to view the EXIF information, simply type exif photo.jpg, replacing photo.jpg with the name of the file.

465 Open Sourse Fonts

All credit to Brian Kent (http://www.aenigmafonts.com) who’s not only an excellent font designer but is also committed to the ideals of open source software and has made 465 of his font creations available to Ubuntu users. To install the fonts, you’ll need to add a new software repository:

click System → Administration → Software Sources, then the Third-Party Software tab, and click the Add button.

Then type the following into the dialog box that appears:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/corenominal/ubuntu hardy main

Click the Add Sources button, then the Close button, and, when prompted, agree to reload the package lists.

Then use Synaptic to search for and install the ttf-aenigma package.

Once installed the fonts will be available for use straight away in all applications.

Installing Off Line Dictionary and Threasure in UBUNTU

Finally i have succeeded installing good dictionary and treasure in my UBUNTU 8.10. But i think it should work in all other UBUNTU version too. I recommend Method I which is simplest and easiest way...

METHOD I

Fire up the synoptic packet manager and search for stardict. Mark for installation and apply changes. It takes few seconds to download and install.Now go to this page and download desired dictionary. For example if you want oxford then download oxford advanced learner's dictionary. You should download tarball format not an rpm package. After downloading right click the package and select extract here. This extrated folder need to be moved to /usr/share/stardict/dic. To do that there are many method. I used GUI (Graphical User Interface). Before executing this command copy the extrated folder. Open Terminal from application --> Accossaries --> Terminal. Type the folloing comand gksudo nautilus and hit enter.You need to give your admin password after this command. Once the command been executed new window will open. Open File system --> usr --> share --> stardict --> dic
Paste the already copied extracted folder here. Now close the window go to Application --> accosseries --> click stardict and type some words to check. You can install as many as dictionary on that dic folder.

METHOD II

You should have following packages installed to follow this method.

1. dict-gcide
2. wordnet
3. dict-moby-thesaurus
4 dict-jargon
5. dict-vera
and
6. Lexica (No installation required)

Install above packages 1- 5 from Synoptic Package Manager (System --> Administration --> Synoptic Package Manager)

The sixth package Lexica can be downloaded from here.

Copy Lexica to your home folder and extract it by right clicking and selecting an option "Extract Here"

Right click Application menu and select Edit Menus.

In the new window select Office from left side and click +New Items on the right side.

Again click Browse button and navigate through home folder ---> Lexica ---> select lexica. You can give name and comments as per your wish. Now click OK and close all window.

You can find Dictionary (Lexica) GUI from Application ---> Office ---> Lexica(Name provided by you)

Note: You can also access this dictionary by using following command in your terminal.

dict 'word'

Method III

Inbuilt Gnome dictionary which comes with Ubuntu CD is an online dictionary. In this method we are going it to modify to be used for offline purpose. Now open synoptic packet manager and install following packages dictcd, dict-wn and dict-gcide.

Once packages are installed open Gnome dictionary (Application-->Accessories-->Dictionary) and go to edit --> preferences then add new dictionary. In the new window type localhost insted of dict.org in the host name and click add. Now you can see the adtional dictionary in the sourse tab. Enable it and close. Now onwards you shoul be able to use it even while not connected to the internet.

How to install Microsoft Fonts in Linux OS (Gnome and Kde)

This is simple trick to use Microsoft fonts in your Linux operating system.

Copy Fonts from Microsoft windows:
Open C:\ --> windows --> fonts

Here you will find different files along with font files. Copy only font files that is files ending with .ttf or .TTF....

For Gnome user:
Open Home folder --> click view --> show hidden files

Check for .fonts folder. If there is no such folder fine make one. Now open .fonts folder and paste all font files which you have already copied from windows font folder. Now all fonts are ready to use. You can check new fonts from Open Office.org writer....

For Kde users:
Open Konqueror file manager.
Type fonts:/ and hit enter. Now you can find two files 1. personal 2. system. Open one of the folder(preferably personal if there is only one user) and paste fonts which you have already copied from window. As usual you can check new fonts from OpenOffice.org writer...

Connecting Internet without using sudo

If you are not able to connect to Internet without using sudo before wvdial then follow the simple steps...

1. Go to Systems --> Administration --> Users and Groups

New window will open.

2. Unlock by giving your password.

3. Select the user --> Properties

4. Click User Privileges Tab and enable connect to Internet by using a modem

That's it. Now onwards you should be able to connect to Internet just by typing wvdial.

I followed the same steps which I used earlier. Thank god this time with small hitch up it worked perfectly. I followed these simple steps...

(To avoid confusion and errors just copy and paste commands in your terminal
and type your password whenever needed)

1.Open terminal Application--> Accessories--> Terminal

2.Type sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf

This will open wvdial.conf file in new window.

3.Delete the entire content and add (or copy paste) the following...

[Modem0]
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud = 115200
SetVolume = 0
Dial Command = ATDT
Init1 = ATZ
FlowControl = Hardware (CRTSCTS)
[Dialer Defaults]
Username = 9372875603
Password = 9372875603
Phone = #777
Stupid Mode = 1
Inherits = Modem0

"Note: User name and password should be your reliance number."

Once every thing is done save and close the file.

Update: Some time it may not detect your modem on the port USB0(say USB1). To find out your port use this command

sudo dmesg | grep tty

4.Type the folowing command in your terminal.

sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0xfffd

Note: Vendor id can be found by using lsusb -v command for different USB Modem.

5. you are set to connect to internet. Use the following command to connect to internet...

sudo wvdial

If everything goes well you will find some thing like below. Those IP address indicates you are connected to internet. Happy surfing...

--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ

--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT#777

If you are unable to connect to internet next time then use 4th and 5th command in your terminal.

Now I am considering you are able to connect to internet. If this is the case then do the following...

1. unplug and pulg your modem (and wait for a minute).

2.Type sudo gedit /etc/modules in your terminal.

This will open file modules in new window.

3.Add following lines just after the comments.

usbserial vendor=0×19d2 product=0xfffd
cdc_acm

4. Restart your computer with USB modem connected to it.

5. Thats all. Now onwards you should be able to connect to internet with single command (see below)

Improve Open Office.org Startup Time

Tip - I

One of the best way to improve the start up speed is to enabling Open Office quick start. To do that go to Tools --> Options --> Open Office.org --> Memory --> enable Quick start.
Now close the file and again to find out the improvement.

Tip - II

You can minimize open office.org loading time by disabling java runtime environment. Normally java runtime is not required for common applications but should be enabled if you are working on it.

Open Open office.org writer and click tools

Click options...
(new window will appear)

Click Java

Disable Java runtime environment

Click Ok

you can check the speed by closing and opening open office.org...

If your firefox browser always opening in work offline mode and want to get rid of it then here is the solution...

1. open firefox

2. Type in url about:config

3. click i'll be careful, i promise! (if it asks)

4. Find toolkit.networkmanager.disable by typing in the search field.

5. Change the value to true (double click)

6. Restart your browser.

3. Type sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

4. New window will open, add the following line at the end

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop

save and close the window

5. Type sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options in the terminal

6. New window will open, add the following line at the end

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop

save and close the window

7. Restart your laptop

8. Open Terminal and type

gnome-volume-control

make sure that nothing is muted

Configuring Evolution for Gmail IMAP

This step-by-step guide is aiming at users who are not familiar with Evolution or Gmail's IMAP settings. It's easy for experienced users to figure out how to configure Evolution to use Gmail's IMAP by Gmail's official help pages for other mail clients. For those users, this guide may still save them some time.

First, you should enable IMAP in Gmail's setting.

Then you should open Evolution's preferences window. If you are opening evolution for first time then it automatically ask for configuration.

We need to add a new account.

A wizard will appear.

Type in your name and email address.

Then fill in Gmail's IMAP server's information. Note that there is not a port field in Evolution. You should specify the server port use this form imap.gmail.com:993. Also, username should be your full gmail address. And for security, you should use SSL connection.

Next, we'll set some receiving options. Typically you can check first two items. And I recommend that you leave other items unselected.

Now we've finished the IMAP settings, we'll configure sending settings. We'll use the smtp.gmail.com:587 server via TLS. Again, you should note that the username is your full gmail address.

Just pick a name for your account, for example, gmail.
Fill in "gmail" in the Name field. Click the forward button.

Now you've set up all. You can receive your gmails via IMAP now. Try it. (A window will pop up asking for your password. Fill in your Gamil password.)

There is still something left, which are not must-haves. However, I recommend you to read on.

Again, open Evolution's preferences window.

Highlight the account we've created and edit it.

Click the "Edit" button.

We need to configure the draft and sent folder in the Defaults tab.

Note the location of Draft folder. It's inside [Gmail], which itself is inside "gmail". We do this configuration to save our drafts in Gmail's server.

You can make other choices here. But don't save it inside Gmail's sent folder, as this will be done by Gmail itself whenever you use Gmail's smtp.

Finally it's the Gnu PGP settings (if you use PGP keys).

Click "OK" button, and enjoy Evolution with Gmail!
